Large Norwegian Shrinkbox with horizontally hinged lid. A Scotch pine (Les' # 13) was harvested, hollowed out, debarked, washed and then grooved in the base to accept a dry bottom. The green wood cylinder with sealed endgrain seasoned and shrank for a winter (hence a "shrinkbox)onto the dry base to make this traditional style of container used for food storage. The lid hinges horizontally from a sectioned black spruce burl. The lid is secured in place by two ring pins that enter black spruce burl handles. A Swiss chip-carved rosette decorates the center of the lid. This vibrant exotic (for Fairbanks!) tree was planted by a well-known local naturalist. Watco Danish oil finish, natural. 18"H x 20"W x 17"D; Scotch pine, black and white spruce, Alaskan birch; May 2010.

Norwegian Shrinkbox Valise. A Scotch pine (Les' # 13) was harvested, hollowed out, debarked, washed and then grooved in the base to accept a dry bottom. The green wood cylinder with sealed endgrain seasoned and shrank for a winter (hence a "shrinkbox) onto the dry base to make this traditional style of container used for food storage. But the groove wasn't deep enough and the cylinder split. To make lemonade out of lemons, the cylinder was halved and made into a valise (inspired by one in the Vesterheim Museum Collection, Decorah, Iowa). I search for naturally-shaped birch handles. This one is doweled to hinge in birch blocks that are dry fitted with chalk. I relented and used brass hinges because all the mating surfaces are irregular and curved. The external lid strut on the side keeps the empty valise from tipping over when opened. A Swiss chip-carved border decorates the lid. This vibrant exotic (for Fairbanks!) tree was planted by a well-known local naturalist. Watco Danish oil finish, natural, then five coats of homemade furniture crème polish. 19"H x 19"W x 16"D; Scotch pine, black and white spruce, Alaskan birch; May 2010.
